la croix coconut

I found myself wandering the aisles at Target at 8am Sunday morning (really, what else should a restless, 40-week-pregnant person be doing at that time of day?) and came across a new discovery–La Croix coconut flavor! The coconut flavor is natural and subtle and just sweet enough.  Further investigation has revealed that it is only being sold at Target right now.  I had my first can last night and I am slightly obsessed…I feel like I could be pregnant for another 9 months now that I have found my new favorite drink!  Just kidding!!  I am sure it’s just as good as a mixer in a cocktail.  I’ll find out soon enough.

Best New (to me) Thing: Tiseo’s Pizza Dough May 7, 2011

Tiseo's pizza dough

We make pizza a LOT.  A green pizza at least once every other week, I’d say.  I rarely spend the time to make my own dough (I know!  Bad Ang!) and rely on Trader Joe’s bagged dough for our crust needs.  The other day, I was at Western Market in Ferndale and came across bags and bags of Tiseo’s pizza dough hidden way back in the freezer section, in the farthest case, on the bottom shelf.  The dough is $1.29 for a 16 oz bag there, I think.  I brought home two bags and figured we’d give it a try. The dough is frozen solid, but if you leave it in the refrigerator overnight, it thaws out just fine.

Yesterday was another pizza night, and you know what?  Tiseo’s dough is LIGHT YEARS better than Trader Joe’s!!   It is more elastic, easier to roll out (no holes from stretching it too far), holds it’s shape better, gets crispier, turns a really nice shade of golden brown when it cooks, and just tastes better overall than any of the three doughs Trader Joe’s sells.  I like that it’s a local company, too (make in Sterling Heights), and it is really convenient just to keep a few balls of dough in the freezer.

So, there you go.  I’ve tried for years with Trader Joe’s and had what I thought was  a pretty good system down to make it turn out decent (letting it warm up, pre-baking it, not using a rolling pin, etc), but it’s so temperamental, and you never really know how each bag of dough is going to react to the same elements.  I’m glad I found something that is more reliable and delicious.

Products: Gardein Thai Trio July 22, 2010

I stood in line at Whole Foods last night, slightly embarrassed at my purchases:  a chocolate bar, bottle of light ranch dressing, a slice of pizza, and a  Gardein Thai Trio meal.  It was probably the most unhealthy purchase to make the trip down the conveyor belt that day. Chocolate, ranch, pizza, and a processed quick meal? Yeah…not my proudest moment at the grocery store, but I was hungry at the moment (hence the chocolate bar & pizza), and knew I’d have a busy lunch hour the next day (hence the Gardein meal).

The meal comes in three parts–a single serving of basmati rice, a sauce, and a vegetarian “chick’n” stuffed with Thai-spiced vegetables. I ran home at lunch today to heat it up, and when I pulled the “chick’n” out of the package and saw how small it was (the size of a fist…if your fist is the size of a baby’s fist), I knew I’d need a little extra something on the side to bulk it up.  I sliced up one small zucchini and sauteed it quickly with a little salt, pepper, ginger, cayenne, and sesame seeds. The Gardein meal takes about 3-4 minutes in the microwave, so it all came together really quickly.

I liked the rice (nice & fluffy, not too grainy or dry) and the sauce, which was basically just a mild red curry, and the chick’n was good but not great—I liked the variety of veggies inside it, but the chick’n part itself seemed more like a vehicle to get the veggies and sauce into my mouth and not something I’d want to eat on it’s own.  Together it was all fine and tasty, and I loved having the extra serving of zucchini in the bowl with the meal.  Final verdict? I’d definitely buy it again when I’m pressed for time or if I came across it on sale.  3 out of 5 stars!  🙂
